Rodents live and thrive in a variety of locations. They are found in and around homes and businesses, as well as in farms and agricultural fields. House mice in particular consume and contaminate food for human and livestock consumption. They may cause damage to structures and property, and they may also transmit diseases causing food poisoning and dysentery.
In short, if you have a rodent problem, it’s best to treat it as soon as possible for you and your family’s health. As a business owner, rodents can literally be eating away your profit potential.
Biology & Life Cycle
The most common type of rodent in Missouri is the “House Mouse,” a nondescript, brownish rodent with relatively large ears and small eyes. Don’t let their Disney-like description fool you. In urban settings, mice and rats often obtain much of their diet from the pet’s dish or from pet spills.
House mice in particular have a tremendous reproductive capacity. In a single year, a female may have five to 10 litters of usually five or six young each. Young are born 19 to 21 days after mating and reach reproductive maturity in six to 10 weeks. The life span of a mouse is usually nine months to one year.

Diet & The Search for Food
Although mice prefer cereal grains, they will almost anything! Often causing great destruction along the way. Where mice have been feeding, our exterminators often find droppings, fresh gnawing and tracks. Mouse nests, made from fine shredded paper or other fibrous material, are often found in these locations, too. House mice have a characteristic musky odor that identifies their presence. Mice occasionally are seen during daylight hours, but they are most active at night.
